On April 21, data released by market research institute Canalys showed that in the first quarter of 2025, India’s smartphone shipments fell by 8% year-on-year to a total of 32.4 million units, mainly affected by continued weak demand and high channel inventory at the end of 2024. Vivo topped the list with 7 million units shipped and a 22% market share, further extending its lead. Samsung shipped 5.1 million units, and Xiaomi ranked third with 4 million units shipped and a market share of 12%. OPPO (excluding OnePlus) shipped 3.9 million units, and realme shipped 3.5 million units.
Sanyam Chaurasia, senior analyst at Canalys, said 2025 is likely to be a channel-led year again as consumer demand remains weak. In the absence of strong organic demand, manufacturers are increasingly relying on retail and distribution networks to drive sales. Channel incentive programs, offline promotional activities, and closer collaborative sales will be key to competing for market share.
Chaurasia added that in the first quarter of 2025, vivo extended its lead with a balanced product portfolio and efficient channel execution. The V50 series significantly increased brand exposure through a collaboration with ZEISS, a wedding season marketing campaign and a KOL-led promotional campaign; The T-Series and Y-Series achieve strong online and offline synergies.
OPPO (excluding OnePlus) has achieved steady growth by leveraging its retail strengths, emphasizing durable design, waterproof features, and long battery life. realme regained growth momentum after completing inventory adjustments, with nearly 20% of shipments coming from the newly launched 14X 5G models, and offline channels contributing 58% of its shipments. In contrast, although Xiaomi launched the Note 14 series earlier, the market response was muted due to high inventory and conservative channel sentiment. However, the Redmi 14C 5G has performed solidly in the entry-level market, helping the brand maintain a certain shipment momentum.
